Show Time for Lighting and Home Improvement Fairs Inaugural Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition Captures the Spotlight

A designer world of products is in the spotlight today with the opening of the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair and the Hong Kong International Hardware and Home Improvement Fair. Attracting more than 1,400 exhibitors, the two fairs continue through October 31, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The largest show of its kind in Asia, the Lighting Fair has attracted more than 1,340 exhibitors from 31 countries and regions, a 10 per cent increase over last year. The show features a dazzling array of new and innovative products, including residential and office lighting, outdoor lighting, festive lighting and part and accessories.

Two bright new sections have been added this year, Crystal Indulgence Zone, a showcase for crystal lighting and chandeliers of the highest quality, and Galaxy of Stars, a showcase that displays lighting in a sophisticated environment. Back again this year are the popular Green Lighting Zone, Holiday Favour Zone, Outdoor Lighting Section, Parts and Accessories Pavilion and World of Table Lamps.

Also in the limelight is the 1st Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition, with its “Light Up Your Future” theme. The competition’s inaugural Champion is Fan Cheuk Hang, a design student at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE Shatin). Runners-up are Chiu Yu Ling, from IVE Shatin, and Chan Pui Yee, a Hong Kong Polytechnic University student.

“Trajectory,” the name of Mr Fan’s winning design, was inspired by the path of the planets across the sky. Bulbs can be randomly placed by users along a metal circuit. “The design took me three weeks to do from inspiration to output,” said Mr Fan, who added that “the most difficult challenge was making the metal circuit light up the bulbs.”

“Home,” the name of Chiu Yu Ling’s winning design, was inspired by the traditional Chinese porcelain rice bowl. The lighting is soft and comfortable under the translucent porcelain lampshade. “I hope my design helps to emphasise the beauty of Chinese traditional porcelain artwork,” said Mr Chiu.

The winning designs, as well as those of the finalists, are on display at Lighting Display Zone located at Hall 1 Concourse.

“In the first eight months of 2007, Hong Kong exports of lighting products totalled US$955 million (HK$7.45 billion), while exports of hardware and building materials increased by almost eight per cent, to US$8.4 billion (HK$65.5 billion), over the same period last year. Over the last several years, much more emphasis has been placed on design engineering and quality,” said Eddy Lee, a Council member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC).

The Hong Kong International Hardware and Home Improvement Fair offers a comprehensive range of hardware and home improvement products from 137 exhibitors representing 10 countries and regions. Taiwan features a group pavilion, and a new DIY Zone showcases handles, power tools, hand tools, locks and do-it-yourself products. Décor Zone, Outdoor and Gardening World and Sanitary World.
